About the Symposium

The First Indo-Nepal Joint Symposium on Engineering Geology (INJSEG 2026) is a landmark bilateral scientific event jointly organized by the Nepal Society of Engineering Geology (NSEG), Nepal National Group of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG), and the Himalayan Society of Geoscientists (HSG), India.

The symposium brings together engineering geologists, geologists, geotechnical engineers, researchers, policymakers, infrastructure professionals, and students from Nepal, India, and the international geoscience community to address the rapidly evolving geological challenges of the Himalayan region.

Held in conjunction with the Fourth National Engineering Geology Day (NEG Day 2026), the symposium aims to establish a long-term collaborative platform that promotes scientific exchange, regional cooperation, technological innovation, and sustainable infrastructure development across the Himalaya.

Through keynote lectures, technical sessions, poster presentations, panel discussions, networking events, and professional awards, INJSEG 2026 seeks to strengthen the role of Engineering Geology in disaster risk reduction and resilient mountain development.

Symposium Theme

Silent Forces of Nature and Growing Risks in the Himalayan Region

Many geological hazards develop silently over decades before becoming catastrophic events. Climate change, tectonic activity, progressive slope weakening, glacier retreat, changing hydrological regimes, and human interventions collectively influence the stability of the Himalayan landscape.

The symposium explores these evolving processes from an Engineering Geology perspective, emphasizing scientific understanding, innovative technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and regional cooperation for disaster resilience.

Why Indo–Nepal?

Nepal and India share one of the world’s most dynamic and geologically complex mountain systems the Himalaya. The two countries also share river basins, active tectonic structures, climate-induced hazards, transportation corridors, hydropower development, and rapidly expanding mountain infrastructure. Challenges such as earthquakes, landslides, debris flows, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), slope instability, and climate change do not recognize political boundaries. Addressing these challenges therefore requires regional scientific collaboration, knowledge exchange, and coordinated research efforts. The First Indo-Nepal Joint Symposium on Engineering Geology has been established to strengthen this collaboration by bringing together experts from academia, government, industry, and international organizations to share experiences, discuss emerging challenges, and promote sustainable engineering geological practices throughout the Himalayan region.
